Dieing To Run

If I know one thing about runners, they are not going to like this information! They tend to get pretty protective of their sport. I found a post on facebook by Dr. John Berardi and thought I'd look into it though...

There's a growing number of experts who believe that extreme endurance athletes may be doing as much harm to their longevity as couch potatoes.
A new study from the British Medical Journal involving 52,600 runners followed over 30 years found that those who ran greater than 20 miles a week seem to give up the benefits that running offers. The study also found that runners who ran faster than 8 miles per hour also seem to lose the health benefits of running.
Mortality rates amongst marathon runners seem to be low. It's about one in 100,000. This research does not suggest that running or extreme running poses a cardiac risk. This research seems to suggest that over doing the running may be giving back the gain of longevity you acquired with regular moderate exercise.

Dr John Berardi said that it may be time to open a conversation about this. I agree.
